DLR Extension Public Realm

client: London Borough of Newham
location: London
date: 2008

category: masterplanning/public realm

Short listed submission to undertake the design and implementation of transport, accessibility and public realm improvements on the main pedestrian links to, and the environs around, the four new stations, from West Silvertown to King George V, on the route of the DLR extension.

To improve the environment beneath and surrounding the DLR viaduct, LLA’s proposal consisted of the introduction of elements of soft landscaping to support the introduction of a linear urban park along its corridor. Where soft landscaping is not practical a degree of artifice is required, and the proposals included floral patterning on perforated panels providing lighting and signage, suspended beneath the viaduct, carried through to surface treatment of the zone beneath the viaduct employing materials indigenous to the area, for example, chalk and oyster shells.
